The Schlachthof site is undergoing a fundamental transformation. On the basis of an adopted usage strategy, we are developing the urban planning and spatial foundations for the gradual conversion of the site into an urban commercial district with public open space and school uses, while operations continue until 2030.
At the heart of the test planning is the question of how the site can preserve its industrial identity of food production while simultaneously being opened up to the neighbourhood, connected to the surrounding urban fabric and sustainably densified. In a participatory process, we worked as one of two interdisciplinary teams across three phases and through multiple workshops and dialogue formats to develop design approaches.
The developed concepts demonstrate what mix of uses, comprising commercial, school, open space and assessed residential uses – is feasible, how a neighbourhood-compatible access strategy and phasing could be structured, and how a careful approach to the largely protected existing buildings can be reconciled with the development objectives. The findings of the test planning feed into a subsequent in-depth study phase and ultimately into a masterplan.
